This is Ed. Ed rocks.
You should get to know him.

Fuente Eterno '08

Warning!  Chock full o’nudity!

While my gatekeeper, Ed, does his Fuente Pool Party Boogie, let's pause for a decision...

My eight-year old daughter, while viewing these photos, asked, “Daddy, why don’t these people wear swimsuits?”  I heaved a great sigh, because I knew she had reached the age where the right answer requires reframing the question from the opposite direction and asking why anyone in their right mind would wear clothing while luxuriating in a hot bath in the first place.

So, we had a long conversation, ranging from the nude Olympics and public baths of the ancient Greeks and Romans, to the differences between modern European and American beaches, and, of course, the role religion has played in covering up the human body.

In the end, I think I helped her to understand that the casual, playful nudity seen at Burning Man or events like Fuente is not so much a taking off as a questioning of the basic premise that something must be put on in the first place.  She seemed to understand perfectly when I put it in terms one her own favorite questions: “But why?”

So here’s a tip of the Philosopher’s hat to all of you who made this beautiful event possible, and all of you who have asked — at Fuente or Burning Man, or anywhere else , in the context of clothing, or partying, or grown-up rules of any kind — But why?”

I salute you.

Yes! Take me to Fuente Eterno!

No! Lead me not into temptation
