2009 was a busy Burn. I somehow took over 5,000 photos in 7 days, which tells you how I spent most of my time. Nevertheless, I managed to attend nearly all of the daily science lectures at our Future Camp (officially the brainiest camp on the playa), catch up with old friends, pester Scott London and his family daily for superglue and other necessitates that I lacked the foresight to bring, party with the coolest people on earth, and generally have a good time. I often think that if I could be as productive in my normal life as I am at Burning Man, I would be amazingly successful and immensely wealthy. But alas, one can't keep up this pace all the time. After a week of it, I need a vacation from my vacation. The images this year were shot with two cameras, a Canon 40D with a EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens, and a Canon Rebel XT (veteran of many burns) bearing a 70-200mm f/4 L IS. I never changed lenses because I hate to get playa dust inside the camera body. The cameras survived remarkably well, despite taking a fall from my bike at full speed, and despite the fact that I never take any measures to protect or weather-proof them. I find the hassle of keeping the camera swaddled in plastic baggies or other wrappings to be an intolerable nuisance and a hindrance to spontaneity. I just blow the dust off every night, and occasionally clean a lens or filter when something happens to get mud on it (which occurs remarkably often for such a dry environment). As always, I want to give huge thanks to everyone who posed, performed, laughed, danced, smiled, or otherwise made this a beautiful year on the playa. See you next time!
